As the jobs market becomes harder to get into, accessing new experiences and developing transferable skills within the workplace are more inportant than ever in order to enhance your employment prospects.
Michelle Officer started work at Manchester technology firm, ANS Group, as a 15-year-old schoolgirl on work experience. Her drive and commitment eventually led to her being taken on as an apprentice. Six years later, Michelle is a Service Delivery Co-ordinator and developing a career.
Michelle says:
"I was interested in IT and got a work placement with ANS Group. I kept in touch with my mentor from ANS throughout college and regularly went back on work experience throughout the holidays. At one point I was at college full time, had a part-time job as a waitress and was working at ANS Group either alongside the web designers or on the helpdesk."
But her hard work paid off, as she went on to win North West Apprentice of the Year 2008.
She says:
"I started out as a systems engineer and moved around the company. My current role is helping and supporting customers. Work experience was the best thing I did and I would encourage all students to get work placements, and, if they like the company, to keep in regular contact, as it could lead to a full-time-job."
