Back Up Solutions

The first element of company protection should be for the data, without data there will be no service. Data corruption must be prevented at all costs. In General this is protected by the backup device and as data sizes grow recovery can be lengthy, typically on a fully trusted backup system this would take a day to recover yesterdays data providing a 48 hour loss of service, in practice very few backup systems are fully trusted and compromises are made to maintain user performance as the backup process expands beyond the out of hours availability.

• Snapshot data and CDP provisions will provide immediate file recovery
• Presentations of snapshots either physical or virtual disks to a backup server will provide out of bound backups to tape with no risk of open files
• HSM solutions minimise the backup requirements and restoration times to ensure only real data is backed up
• Virtual tape libraries can be used to provide Disk to Disk to tape backups

Ultimately although a backup to tape should not be relied upon for disaster recovery there will always be a requirement to backup data to tape or other long term storage media in the traditional manner to ensure that there is sufficient retention of data to meet financial and other regulations.

For many organisations the tape backup device is the main recovery point in the event of a disaster.
